WWTCD: What Would The Cartel Do?
Sometimes I think about how I could better extend the use of things at my home by cutting "the good stuff" with something similar, but cheaper. I do this with all kinds of consumer packaged goods.
Hand soaps around the house, whiskey blending, and sometimes I'll take a nice barrel-aged beer like Bourbon County Stout and press it in a French Press with some shaved coconut or vanilla beans to create a variant that tastes pretty close to ones that sometimes sell on the secondary market for a pretty penny. But the example below is the only one that makes me feel like I should be hiding out in the basement of a Cartel-owned establishment with scoops, weights, measures, etc. when I do it:
The Cut - Protein Powder
I really enjoy the Phormula 1 flavors of protein that 1st Phorm makes. They really innovated in a space that for years had "Vanilla / Chocolate / Strawberry". Even when other whey protein makers branched out, the flavors were terrible with a chalky aftertaste.
My personal faves are ones that taste like breakfast cereal, mainly because when I workout in the morning, it's nice to "treat yo self" to something that tastes like Cinnamon Toast Crunch leftover milk or Fruity Pebbles.
The problem is, I'm sometimes frugal, and the price on these is higher than other high quality proteins like Gold Standard cost/ounce.
So after a few different ratios to determine best overall taste and ability to spread out the product longer, I've found that mixing 35% of a standard vanilla protein powder with 65% of the pricier version keeps the flavor, and helps turn a 32 serving Phormula 1 container into about 49 total servings.
So go on - get out there and see what you can do.
